Job Description

Shtetl is a new independent non-profit media outlet covering the ultra-Orthodox/Haredi community of New York and beyond. Shtetl covers issues in the Haredi community that matter to the community and to New Yorkers in general. Our mission is to report honestly and accurately on the Haredi community, to be a source of truthful and illuminating information that can inform the people and hold the powerful accountable. 

Shtetl is seeking to hire a full-time marketing and development manager to raise Shtetl’s public profile and financial standing. Join a team that does unique, groundbreaking reporting on a community of a quarter of a million people that currently receives little independent coverage.

Ideal candidates would have a good understanding of the Haredi community and excellent writing skills. They would be agile, motivated and enterprising with a background in development and marketing. 

You will work closely with the Publisher to plan and execute development and marketing strategies to improve the reach and size of Shtetl. You will shape compelling stories about Shtetl for funders, grant-makers and other media outlets. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Establishing a marketing and development strategy
  • Identifying individual and foundational prospects
  • Submitting grant proposals
  • Setting up and maintaining a database of donors
  • Planning fundraising events
  • Stewarding donors personally, or through verbal and written communications
  • Pitching the Shtetl story as a whole, as well as specific investigations to media outlets
  • Driving digital marketing initiatives, using data analytics, AI-driven insights, and emerging technologies to increase awareness and audience 
  • Managing a marketing budget that ensuring efficient allocation of resources to show an increase in audience that can drive ROI through development

Prerequisites:

  • 5-7 years experience in marketing and/or development 
  • Extensive working knowledge of general fundraising practices and procedures
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to write and speak in clear and compelling ways
  • Working knowledge of, or interest in, media and the Haredi community
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • A positive attitude and an entrepreneurial spirit
  • Demonstrated willingness to work effectively as part of a team and with all levels of donors
  • Proficiency in Google Docs
  • Close attention to detail
  • Experience with Salesforce, Blackbaud or comparable CRM 

Additional criteria: 

The following skills are not required, but will enhance a candidate’s application:

  • Event planning
  • Graphic design
  • Fluency in Yiddish

Salary and Benefits

Compensation:

90-100k, commensurate with experience and compatibility
