Job Description

Shtetl seeks a Managing Editor to lead and grow its newsroom. The Managing Editor will work closely with the Founder/Editor-in-Chief to envision coverage of news, politics, culture, and investigations reflecting the highest journalism standards while producing stories that are fresh, exciting, readable, and impactful. The Managing Editor will be responsible for Shtetl’s day-to-day journalism, including but not limited to stories, investigations, photographs, opinion pieces, columns, videos and social media. Specifically, the editor will:

  • Supervise editorial staff, freelance reporters and columnists
  • Edit and publish stories on Shtetl’s website and any other platform
  • Report and write stories about the Haredi community
  • Oversee investigations and enterprise stories
  • Imagine ways to attract readers and supporters
  • Manage the website in its day-to-day operations and continuing improvements

This is the right job for you if you have:

  • At least five years of experience in journalism
  • Superb writing and editing skills
  • A passion for start-up culture
  • Familiarity with New York’s political scene
  • A willingness to publish provocative stories that adhere to the highest standards of fairness and accuracy
  • An ability to work with others in a small, dynamic environment
  • An eagerness to experiment in the digital space
  • A craving for new, creative endeavors

The following criteria are not required but will enhance a candidate’s application:

  • Familiarity with the Haredi and/or Hasidic community of New York
  • Tech savvy
  • Web development
  • Google Suite (Docs, Spreadsheets, etc.)
  • Database management tools
  • Graphic design and video editing skills
  • Social media skills
  • Public speaking experience
  • Event management experience
  • Reside in or near NYC

Salary and Benefits

Annual salary: $100-$120k, commensurate with experience and other criteria

Benefits: 401k matching, Health insurance, generous PTO policy (including Jewish & legal holidays, sick days, and personal days off).
