New York City Council member introduces bill on antisemitism awareness — New York City Council member Shahana Hanif, who represents parts of Boro Park and Kensington, introduced a bill on Thursday to combat antisemitism. Hanif, who faced controversy earlier this year for not supporting the creation of an annual day to “end Jew hatred,” proposed a monthlong campaign to educate New Yorkers about antisemitism and the historic contributions of Jewish New Yorkers.

DeSantis meets with nine Orthodox leaders ahead of Rosh Hashanah Florida governor and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis had a meeting this week with nine Orthodox Jewish leaders in New York, DeSantis tweeted. Zvi Gluck, the CEO of Amudim, a resource center for victims of sexual abuse and other emergencies, was present, along with Rabbi Yaakov Menken, director of the website Torah.org, and Motti Seligson, the director of media for Chabad.

House speaker meets with Hasidic leaders upstate — Republican congressman Kevin McCarthy, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, has met with New York Hasidic leaders at least three times in recent months, including two visits with the Skverer rebbe, David Twersky, reports the New York Post. McCarthy said he feels confident that Orthodox Jews would support Republicans in 2024.

Monsey rabbi made to apologize, fined, for defaming former Israeli prime minister — An Israeli court ruled that Rabbi Yosef Mizrachi will have to apologize to former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and his mother, and pay them about $13,000 worth of shekels, for claiming that the woman is not Jewish, according to Kikar HaShabbat, a Hebrew-language Haredi news site. Mizrachi, who is Israeli and uses social media to conduct Orthodox Jewish outreach, has lived in Monsey, New York.

Upstate Haredi leaders planning lawsuit over educationA group of Haredi leaders from Rockland and Orange counties is planning to sue the New York State Education Department over its recent steps to oversee private school education, according to the Albany Times-Union. The outlet reports that the rabbis directed their schools to stop accepting public funding.

Rabbi provides antisemitism training for immigrant workers employed by Hasidim In an opinion piece for The Forward, Rabbi Margo Hughes-Robinson writes about providing antisemitism training for the Cabricanecos, a group of Guatemalan immigrant workers, employed by Hasidim, who are campaigning for fair wages and workplace safety. “We shared historic and personal narratives of migration and finding opportunity in Brooklyn as Jewish and Guatemalan community members, and dug into stereotypes that arose both on the worksite and outside of it,” she writes.

Masbia and Met Council distribute food before Rosh Hashanah — Kosher soup kitchen network Masbia plans to distribute close to $1 million worth of food this High Holiday season, according to Boro Park 24. Separately, Haredi leaders in Boro Park met recently to distribute food with the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, according to Hamodia.
